The DCMS has changed it's name to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to 'better reflect it's remit'. A restructuring also separates Arts, Culture, Tourism & Heritage from Digital & Media. Minister Matt Hancock now solely focusses on digital and creative industries, with arts and culture passed down to Parliamentary Under Secretary John Glen, considered by many to signal a 'downgrading' of the arts by the government.
Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Karen Bradley said:
'DCMS celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and it is fitting now to include Digital in the name. The department has taken on significant new responsibilities in recent years, so that half of its policy and delivery work now covers the digital sectors - telecommunications, data protection, internet safety, cyber skills and parts of media and the creative industries.'
It remains unclear what the changes will mean for the arts and culture in wider government policy, such as the upcoming industrial strategy, which cabinet ministers promised to put creative industries “at the heart” of.
