Strategic Thinking

With special guest speaker Emma Stenning, Head of Producing at Manchester International Festival and from September, Executive Director at Bristol Old Vic.

Emma was previously Head of Theatre at Arts Council England, London, Cultural Programme Advisor for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games, Executive Director of BAC, Administrator at Complicite and Producer at Oxford Stage Company.

Together with Tom Morris she has an independent producing company, Schtanhaus, which has over the past five years developed and produced work with the RSC, Filter Theatre, Warwick Arts Centre, Beggars Belief, Paines Plough, Hampton Court Palace, and the National Theatre.

Emma was a 2005 Clore Fellow, is Chair of Theatre 503, vice chair of Headlong, and a trustee of Cheek by Jowl and Fevered Sleep.

Emma will be sharing her experiences as a leading figure in the theatre sector and giving us an insight into her vision for moving the Bristol Old Vic into the future. Check out Lyn Barbour's thought-provoking Guardian article on regional theatre to find out more about why Emma and her fellow Artistic Director, Tom Morris, have chosen to make the venue their next challenge.

Emma will lead a Creative Conversation about:

  • The similarities and differences between Manchester International Festival and Bristol Old Vic as cultural flagships.
  • The challenge of providing (to quote the Guardian) a "blue print for a dynamic future" in Bristol, why this is (or isn't) needed
  • The opportunity of regional theatre.
  • The possibility of an organisation that is local, regional, national and international.
  • The weight of expectation, and whether that is a good or bad thing!
  • The artist and the producer; how the partnership works.

We are delighted that Emma is sparing the time to join the next Creative Conversation and we're pretty sure this will be a popular event!
