greenroom exposed: try something new

Thursday 6 March, from 4pm – FREE ENTRY

what is it?

It’s an ‘open day’ where we’ll be encouraging people to ‘try something new’ at greenroom. It’s an opportunity for people to see and experience what goes on underneath the arches at our unique venue.

why are we doing it? who is it for?

greenroom is a valuable resource for artists developing work at the start of their professional lives. We work with emergent artists creating new performance work from scratch. There are no big names, there are no well-known play titles, often the performances are difficult to promote because the artists are still developing the work hours before the public enter the building. As a result, not many people know what we do.

greenroom exposed is for all and everyone – it’s a genuine ‘open day’ and we’re hoping to attract people who’ve never been here before, those that have been curious as to what we do, but never ventured in.

2008 is greenroom’s 25th anniversary year and we’re hoping to make sure that as many people as possible know that we’re here, what we do and how they can take part, as audiences or artists.

when is it? how long does it last?

greenroom exposed will take place on Thursday 6 March from 4pm until 12 midnight. Come for 20 minutes, 2 hours or the whole night.

what should I expect?

We’re hoping to present a range of performance and creative events throughout the afternoon/evening, so that no matter what time you turn up, you get an opportunity to sample the types of performance we develop and present at greenroom all year round. Whatever time you arrive, you’re likely to see artists developing performance work live in front of you, take part in ‘staged’ conversations with artists, listen to live and electronic music on the mezzanine, experience some new performance poetry, take part in a cake making frenzy in the kitchen, and sample the wares too! Or just enjoy the informal atmosphere in our bar, sample the good beer and kick-back.

There will be performances all over the building – in our theatre, workspace (where artists generally develop new work), our kitchen, lift and toilets!

Featuring:
performance poetry by Segun Lee-French; puppetry demonstration by Nenagh Watson; one to one 1 minute performances in our lift by Jonathan McGrath of Ikebana Performance; impromptu comedy from the Reverend Conor A; Chris Fitzsimmons will share with the audience how he goes about creating a piece of performance; Krissi and Jenny from Escape Theatre will be baking cakes in the kitchen and inviting the ‘audience’ to help them (make them and eat them!); performances from Tam Hinton, Until Thursday, Sinead King and Pigeon Theatre, films from regular cabaret masters Vaudeville, NanimeW, Phil Sykes (Sometimes) and Qasim Riza Shaheen. All over the building there’ll be visual art from Trafford based artist Harriet Godden.

Whether you call in for a few minutes or stay for a couple of hours, you’ll be sure to see something you’ve never experienced before. Expect the weird and truly wonderful and you won’t be disappointed. Go on – try something new and extraordinary at greenroom.

There’s no need to RSVP – just turn up, anytime from 4pm (finishing at midnight).

Instant Win!

Instant Win returns for it’s fourth incarnation on Friday 7 March, at 8pm. Come and pitch an idea to a panel (and an audience) and win a £500 commission. You’ve got just 60 seconds to make your case.

The ‘instant winner’ will receive a £500 commission to realise the idea and present it as part of the greenroom programme.

Interested? ‘Pitches’ are invited from performance artists across a range of non-narrative disciplines, and the idea could be realised as experimental performance, dance, installation, durational performance or live art.

Remember we need an audience as well as pitchers, so come along and watch Manchester’s new wave of experimentalists pitch their ideas from genius to ludicrous.

For more information and to register as a contestant, please download, read and complete: Information and Registration Form. If you experience any problems downloading this document please contact greenroom via e-mail info@greenroomarts.org or telephone on 0161 615 0500.

This year Instant Win! is on the road and visits Waterside Arts Centre, Sale on Saturday 15 March. For more information go to: www.greenroomarts.org/instantwinwac
