Partner News: Young People Create New Lease of Life in Moston
A popular Moston landmark was resurrected recently by youngsters from North East Manchester and pioneering theatre Contact, as part of a unique and innovative project.
The former Co-op building, on Moston Lane, was brought back to life when young people from the area transformed the building to host a week of free, creative workshops including: DJing, MCing, photography, film making and street art .
The initiative was made possible by funding from Manchester City Council. Aimed at 0-19 year olds, the project brought together groups of young people, not in education, employment or training (NEET), in an initiative designed to encourage skills in creativity, offer fun activities and bring the community together.
The young people who helped resurrect the building are all 13 to 19 years and have worked with Contact before through previous projects with Detached Youth Teams and Youth Offending Teams in Moston.
Team members from Contact, Mancunian artists and North Manchester's Regeneration Team worked closely to create this unique and innovative opportunity for young people from the Moston area to take part in the on-site workshops to gain valuable new skills.
The project also offered a unique opportunity to consult with the local young people about the cultural activities and opportunities that interest them most and what they would like access to in the future. This research will be used in the planning and development of future cultural work in North Manchester both by Contact and other cultural organisations.
Project leader and Head of Creative Development at Contact, Suzie Henderson, said:
“We were really happy with the outcome of the project. Some young people were nervous about participating at first, but as the week went on they became more and more involved. There's real talent out there and we hope we've helped to develop and nurture that into something for the future.”
