Senegalese ‘Hendrix of the Kora’ Seckou Keita and his international quintet, are set to kick off the brand new autumn season at Waterside Arts Centre on Friday 2nd October.

Accompanying to Seckou Keita to form the quintet is Davide Mantovani [double bass/electric bass] from Italy, Surahata Susso from The Gambia on percussions, the distinguished sound of Samy Bishai from Egypt on vocals, and the enchanting voice of the gracious Gambian Binta Suso. The result is a captivating contemporary sound with melodies that serve to capture the most courageous imagination and rich depth of human emotion.
Counting Richard Bona, Bela Fleck and Bobby McFerrin amongst his influences, the music of Seckou Keita cannot be confined to any one genre, dipping comfortably in and out of jazz, classical, Flamenco, with sometimes hints of rock and reggae. Seckou Keita leads the quintet with his experimental tunings, making him one of the most innovative and creative known kora player in the world today shifting SKQ into a music category all of its own.
Championing ‘eco-friendliness’ through CO2 Balance UK, SKQ are minimising their carbon emissions and offsetting their unavoidable CO2 residue by produced all their material on recycled paper or paper from sustained forests. They also offset all their tour emissions the band by donating money towards East Africa Energy Efficiency and contribute to tree planting in the UK.
