We are pleased to announce details of our next Spotlight On, in partnership with Contact.

This practical panel-led information and networking event is open to anyone working in the performing arts in the North West. Join us at 6.30pm on Tuesday 30th June 2009 to reflect on where the financial crisis has left the performing arts and find out what you can do to survive the downturn with your artistic integrity intact.

In those cosy pre-financial crisis days when credit was smooth not crunchy and getting money to make your art was as simple as A, C, E, nobody struggled to support themselves in the performing arts, right? Well, not exactly! Choosing a career in the arts has never been the easy option, and today more than ever it can be a struggle to find the resources to support yourself and make your work.

These are difficult times economically and with greater pressure on fewer resources, the role of the artist to harness their power of imagination to enable them to survive is now more critical than ever.

Could it be that from adversity comes opportunity? Now is the time to do what you do best and get creative – finding new ways to support yourself and your work through alternative income streams.

PANDA has always been keen to encourage our members to generate their income from different sources, not just from grant funding. In this Spotlight On we invite a panel of expert speakers to discuss creative ways of diversifying and maximising your income streams, including:

  • Arts Council England – how will funding cuts affect the quality and quantity of new work being produced in our region? And have artists become too dependent on Arts Council funding anyway?

  • Trusts and foundations – alternative pots of funding that you can apply for, how to find out about them and get the money!

  • Third sector support – what is available for creative individuals and organisations and how to access the funding, finance and business development services.

  • Sponsorship and commercial – how to approach organisations to support you with money and ‘in kind’ or free stuff!

  • Financial advice – and finally, find out how to manage all these different income streams so you don’t lose it all to the tax man at the end of the year.

Speakers to be announced soon, watch this space...

You are invited to stay on after the discussion for an additional hour-long networking event. This may include a participatory workshop, an 'open space' style discussion or networking exercises. Whatever the format, you can guarantee it will be welcoming and relaxed with plenty of opportunity to chat to all the new contacts you’ve made.
